Who was Edward Browne Howarth?
I
am sure there will be many of the Lord’s redeemed people who read ‘writings of
others’ on ‘the website’ would like
to know: for without Divine Providence, and Edward B. Howarth’s help and generosity,
this Christian website would not be available.
Being
the first
born son in a family of six children, Edward’s sister Pearl and her brother Norman, both died at four and two years
of age; and it was feared that Edward (then six) would perish also:
but, after his father Norman prayed to God for his life, he received an answer to
his prayer in the words: “Bring thy son hither”
(Luke 9: 41). Edward’s life was spared.
Born on 19th. June, 1922, and born
again on 17th. April 1931 through faith in our Lord
Jesus Christ at nine years of age, God had plans for the long life and work of
the boy Edward whom He had saved from death three years earlier. What were they?

Like
G. H. Lang – that great saint of God
whose writings are featured throughout this website - Edward was also described
as ‘an independent thinker’ – a man not prepared
to accept popular lines of interpretation, without first searching the Holy
Scriptures to see if they were correct. He met Mr. Lang personally in 1956.
D. M. Panton’s writings were also treasured; and as far back as the
1940’s and 50’s, Dawn Magazines were
collected and studied at home. I remember on one occasion some years ago,
asking him the question: “Who was D. M. Panton?” And
consequently, borrowing and photocopying scores of Panton’s
writings from Edward’s books: copies of these same writings are now made available
for others to read and study in their homes.
On
Saturday evening in The Causeway Hospital,
Coleraine, Northern Ireland, I let him see one of the
last writings prepared, and assured him that without his help (and God’s
providence) other Christians would be unable to use ‘the website’. My last words
to him on that Saturday evening were: “Until we meet
again.” On the following Monday
evening he was unconscious, and accompanied at his bedside by all the
family. At about 00.
30 hrs. on Tuesday morning, 22nd.
February, 2011, he went to be with his Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ.
I
consider it to have been a great honour to have known Brother Howarth: he
served his Saviour faithfully to the end of his pilgrimage here, and looked
forward to the time of Christ’s return when He will reward His faithful
servants and establish His millennial kingdom.
